What is skin tag removal?
Skin tags are small, brown, or flesh-coloured growths (usually a few millimetres to 5cm in size) that hang from the surface of your skin. They are made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin and can look like warts or raised bumps. Although skin tags are common, they are harmless, and they do not usually cause any pain or discomfort. They can snag on clothing or jewellery and bleed as a result and can also lower your self-esteem.
What causes skin tags?
Skin tags can affect both men and women. Skin tags most commonly occur where the skin folds or creases (most commonly on the neck, armpits, around the groin, or under the breasts) and are more likely to affect overweight people. Skin tags can be hereditary, and people who have type 2 diabetes or are pregnant are also more prone to them. Some people can also develop them for no apparent reason.
Your skin tag removal consultation: what to expect
Your skin tag consultation will be with a qualified doctor who will assess your skin tag and determine the most appropriate form of treatment. During your consultation, they will be able to answer any questions you may have about your skin tag and give personal advice. If they decide to remove the skin tag, they will carry out the procedure in-clinic.
Skin tag removal methods
At The Skin Investment Clinic, we offer the following methods of skin tag removal:
Excision Removal: Treatment is carried out under a local anaesthetic and is therefore painless. The skin tag is carefully cut away using a scalpel and removed, leaving only a small white or pink scar in its place.
Cryotherapy: The skin tag is frozen by applying liquid nitrogen (a gas that produces freezing temperatures) to the area. The cold temperature kills the cells within the skin tag, blocking the blood supply to the area and causing it to fall off. In some cases, irritation and temporary skin discoloration may occur, and further treatment may be required if the skin tag does not fall off. Cryotherapy is also used for wart and verruca removal.

How long does it take to heal after skin tag removal?
After your skin tag is removed, the treated area may feel tender for a few days and will need to be covered. Your practitioner will apply a dressing if necessary to prevent infection and will also provide you with full aftercare instructions. Complications are rare, and you will also be able to leave the clinic as soon as your anaesthetic wears off.
Does Skin tag removal leave a scar?
Excision removal will leave a small white or pink scar. With cryotherapy, there is a possibility of scarring and discoloration occurring.
Is skin tag removal painful?
A local anaesthetic will be applied during your skin tag removal procedure, helping to make the treatment virtually painless. This procedure often will take a few minutes to complete.
What is the best skin tag removal method?
At The Skin Investment Clinic, we offer two skin tag removal methods (excision removal and cryotherapy) and your medical practitioner will recommend the one that is best suited to your needs.
Is skin tag removal safe?
Skin tag removal at The Skin Investment Clinic is completely safe and is only carried out by medical doctors in clinical environments. We work with strict protocols.
Will the skin tag grow back?
The treatment will permanently remove the skin tag. However, this will not stop skin tags from growing back in other areas in the future.
What results will I see?
With excision removal treatment, the skin tag will be completely removed, leaving only a small white or pink scar in its place. With cryotherapy, the skin tag will naturally fall off, and in some cases, irritation and temporary skin discoloration may occur. Further treatment may also be required if the skin tag does not fall off.
Can I have my skin tag removed for cosmetic reasons?
Unless your doctor feels there is a medical reason not to remove your skin tag, we are happy to remove your skin tag for cosmetic reasons. We understand how this skin condition can cause low self-esteem and remove skin tags for a lot of clients who cannot receive this treatment on the NHS.
Where on my body can I have skin tag removal treatment?
You can have a skin tag removed from anywhere on your body.
